Notion AI is worth it for most of your seats, and a second subscription for almost none

We read Notion's, OpenAI's and Anthropic's own pricing pages on 12 August 2026 and did the seat math. Buying a second AI subscription for everybody costs a 10 person team 2,100 dollars a year more than buying it for the people who need it.

Quick answer

Yes for most seats, and you almost certainly do not need a second AI subscription for everyone. Notion Business at 20 dollars per member per month includes the interactive AI: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search. The Free and Plus tiers list only a trial of Notion AI, and autonomous work is metered separately at 10 dollars per 1,000 credits. Adding ChatGPT Business or Claude Team at 25 dollars a seat for everybody takes a 10 person team from 200 to 450 dollars a month. Buying it for only the three people who do frontier model work all day costs 275 dollars, a difference of 2,100 dollars a year.

01

Is Notion AI worth it?

Yes for most of your seats, and the reason is that you are already paying for it. The question worth arguing about is not whether Notion AI is good enough. It is whether you should also be buying a second AI subscription for the same people, which is where teams quietly lose a few thousand dollars a year.

So we read the three pricing pages rather than an aggregator's summary of them: Notion's pricing page, OpenAI's business pricing page and Anthropic's pricing page, all on 12 August 2026. Three things came out of that:

  • "Notion AI is included" is only half true. Notion Business at 20 dollars per member per month lists Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search as part of the plan. But Free and Plus list only a trial of Notion AI, and the autonomous layer is metered separately. That is the half that costs money.
  • A second subscription is the same price from either vendor. ChatGPT Business and a Claude Team standard seat are both 25 dollars per seat per month on monthly billing, and both require a minimum of 2 seats. Price is not the tiebreaker between them.
  • Buying it for everyone is the expensive mistake. Ten Notion seats plus ten ChatGPT seats is 450 dollars a month. Ten Notion seats plus three ChatGPT seats is 275 dollars. Same capability for the people who actually use it, 2,100 dollars a year cheaper.

The honest counter case, because it is real: the people who genuinely need a frontier chat subscription are badly served without one. If someone spends their day on long document analysis, code, or open ended drafting that has nothing to do with your Notion content, a workspace assistant is the wrong tool and a trial tier is worse. For those seats, 25 dollars a month is a rounding error against the time it returns.

IV Consulting take We are not neutral about the shape of this decision, only about the vendors. Put everyone on Notion Business, then hand out ChatGPT Business or Claude Team seats by name, to specific people, for stated reasons. Blanket licensing an AI subscription across a whole company is the software equivalent of buying everyone a second monitor because three people asked. If the workspace underneath is the actual problem, that is our Foundation stage.
02

Is Notion AI included in the Business plan?

Notion AI is half included in the Notion Business plan. The distinction Notion draws is between AI you ask for and AI that runs on its own, and only the first kind comes with the 20 dollar seat.

On the pricing page, the Business plan at 20 dollars per member per month lists Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search among the features it adds over Plus. That is the interactive layer: drafting, summarising, searching your workspace, taking meeting notes. No second invoice line.

The Free and Plus plans are where the common misreading starts. Both list Trial of Notion AI, not Notion AI. So a team evaluating on the 10 dollar Plus seat is judging the product by its trial limits, which is not what the 20 dollar seat gives them. If you concluded Notion AI was not good enough, check which plan you concluded that on.

Then the metered half. Custom Agents, the ones that run on a trigger or a schedule, are described as free to try, then 10 dollars per 1,000 monthly Notion credits. Workers, which extend Notion with custom code, are free during beta and start using credits on 15 October 2026, about nine weeks from now. If you have built neither, your Notion AI cost really is just the seat. We go deeper on how that meter behaves in Notion AI credits and limits explained.

Why this table is monthly and not annual Annual billing is cheaper on all three, but only Claude publishes a full annual per seat figure in dollars at 20 dollars a seat. Notion advertises up to 20 percent off yearly without printing the resulting seat price, and OpenAI shows its annual business rate in local currency rather than dollars depending on where you load the page. Rather than mix one verified annual number with two guesses, every comparison here uses monthly billing, which all three vendors publish in dollars. Assume your real annual bill is somewhat lower than the figures below.
03

Do you need ChatGPT or Claude if you already have Notion AI?

Most of your team does not need ChatGPT or Claude on top of Notion AI, and a few people almost certainly do. The split is not about which model is smarter, it is about what the tool is pointed at.

Notion AI is aimed at the content in your workspace. That is precisely what you want for meeting notes, for searching across docs and databases, and for drafting inside a page that already has the context around it. For that work, an outside chat tool is worse, because you spend the first two minutes pasting in the context Notion already had.

A standalone frontier subscription is aimed at everything else: long document analysis, code, research, and open ended work with no relationship to your workspace at all. ChatGPT Business bundles ChatGPT and Codex with connectors to tools like Google Drive, Slack and GitHub. Claude Team puts Claude in a shared team workspace. Neither is trying to be your operating system, and Notion is not trying to be your coding assistant.

So the question is not which one wins. It is how many of your people spend enough of the day in that second category to justify 300 dollars a year each. In most teams we see, the answer is somewhere between two and four out of ten. If you want the task by task version of this split rather than the money version, we wrote it up in Claude vs Notion AI vs ChatGPT: when to use which.

04

What does a second AI subscription cost at 5, 10 and 25 seats?

All three price per seat, so the decision compounds with headcount in a very predictable way. These are our own calculations from the list prices in the table above, on monthly billing.

What a Notion team pays per month once it adds a second AI subscription for every seat, at monthly billing list prices
Team size Notion Business only Plus ChatGPT Business, all seats Plus Claude Team, all seats All three, all seats
5 people$100 a month$225 a month$225 a month$350 a month
10 people$200 a month$450 a month$450 a month$700 a month
25 people$500 a month$1,125 a month$1,125 a month$1,750 a month
Added per year, 10 peopleBaseline$3,000$3,000$6,000

Now the version nobody puts in a pricing table, which is the one that actually saves money. Take the 10 person team. Blanket licensing ChatGPT Business across all ten seats costs 450 dollars a month. Giving it to only the three people who do frontier model work all day costs 275 dollars a month: ten Notion seats at 200 dollars, plus three ChatGPT seats at 75 dollars.

That is 175 dollars a month, or 2,100 dollars a year, for capability the other seven people were not going to open. And it scales the wrong way: on a 25 person team where five people genuinely need it, selective licensing costs 625 dollars a month against 1,125 dollars for blanket coverage, a gap of 6,000 dollars a year.

The reason teams buy the expensive version anyway is fairness rather than economics. It feels arbitrary to give three people a tool and not the rest. Our experience is that naming the seats out loud fixes that faster than paying to avoid the conversation, because the people who did not get one mostly did not want one.

Before you buy a second subscription, price your own seats These figures use list prices and assume your Notion cost is just the seat. Yours is not, if you run Custom Agents or you are about to be affected by Workers starting to consume credits on 15 October 2026. Put your seat count and your expected agent volume into the Notion AI credit calculator and you get a real monthly number for your workspace to compare against the 25 dollar seats, instead of a general recommendation.
IV Consulting take If you are running this decision for a workspace that also has ClickUp in the mix, the seat math changes again, because ClickUp charges for AI as an add-on rather than including it. We priced that pair separately in ClickUp Brain vs Notion AI, per seat.
05

Which seats actually need a second subscription?

To decide which seats need a paid ChatGPT or Claude subscription, go through your team list and put every person in one of these three buckets. The count in the middle bucket is your real budget.

Notion Business is enough

Their AI use is meetings, docs, search and drafting inside the workspace. That is most operations, project management, marketing coordination and leadership seats. They are already covered by the 20 dollar seat and a second subscription would sit unopened.

Buy them the second seat

They spend hours a day on long document analysis, code, or heavy open ended drafting. Usually two to four people in ten. For them the 25 dollar seat pays for itself in a week, and making them work around a workspace assistant is a false economy.

Not a seat problem at all

The work they want is autonomous: something that runs on a schedule without anyone asking. No chat subscription solves that. This is the Notion credits question, or an automation, and it should be scoped as a workload rather than bought as a seat.

One caveat on the middle bucket, because it moves. Model releases change who belongs in it, and the answer you settle on today has a shelf life of about two quarters. Re-run the list when your renewal comes up rather than letting the seats renew on autopilot, which is how a 275 dollar decision quietly becomes a 450 dollar one again.

06

Questions teams ask before they buy AI seats

Is Notion AI worth it?
For most seats yes, and it is worth it largely because you are already paying for it. Notion Business is 20 dollars per member per month and the interactive AI comes with the seat: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search. There is no separate AI fee for everyday work like writing, summarising and asking questions of your own workspace. Two caveats decide the rest. The Free and Plus plans list only a trial of Notion AI, so 20 dollars is the real entry price for AI that is genuinely included. And autonomous work is metered separately at 10 dollars per 1,000 Notion credits, so agents that run on a schedule are not covered by the seat.
Is Notion AI included in the Notion Business plan?
Half of it is, and the half that is not included is the half that scales your bill. Notion's pricing page lists Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search under the 20 dollar Business seat, so the AI a person uses interactively is included. The autonomous layer is not. Custom Agents are described as free to try, then 10 dollars per 1,000 monthly Notion credits, and Workers are free during beta but start using credits on 15 October 2026. So the seat covers the AI you ask for, and credits cover the AI that runs without being asked.
Do I need ChatGPT or Claude if I already have Notion AI?
Most of your team does not, and a few people almost certainly do. Notion AI works on the content inside your workspace, which is exactly what you want for meeting notes, workspace search and drafting inside a doc. A standalone frontier chat subscription is a different job: long document analysis, code, and open ended work that has nothing to do with your Notion content. The honest answer is to buy it per person rather than per company. Give everyone Notion Business, then add ChatGPT Business or Claude Team only for the seats that would otherwise spend the day fighting a tool that was not built for that work.
How much does it cost to give a 10 person team both Notion AI and ChatGPT?
On monthly billing at list prices, 450 dollars a month. Ten Notion Business seats are 200 dollars at 20 dollars each, and ten ChatGPT Business seats are 250 dollars at 25 dollars each. The same team giving ChatGPT Business to only its three heaviest users pays 275 dollars a month instead, because the other seven seats stay on Notion alone. That is a difference of 175 dollars a month, or 2,100 dollars a year, for capability those seven people were not going to use. Annual billing lowers all of these figures.
Is Notion AI free on the Free or Plus plan?
No, you get a trial rather than the feature. Notion's pricing page lists Trial of Notion AI against both the Free plan at 0 dollars and the Plus plan at 10 dollars per member per month. Business at 20 dollars is the first tier where the AI features are listed as part of the plan rather than as a trial. This matters for the buying decision, because a team sitting on Plus and judging Notion AI by its trial limits is not seeing what the 20 dollar seat actually gives them.
Does Claude Team cost more than ChatGPT Business?
On monthly billing they are the same price. A Claude Team standard seat is 25 dollars per seat per month billed monthly, and ChatGPT Business is 25 dollars per user per month billed monthly. They diverge on annual billing and at the top end. Claude publishes an annual standard seat at 20 dollars, and a premium seat at 100 dollars per seat annually or 125 dollars monthly, and describes its Team plan as being for teams of 2 to 150. ChatGPT Business also requires a minimum of 2 users. Because the monthly list prices match, price is not the reason to choose between them. Task fit is.
