ClickUp Brain vs Notion AI: the real gap is 8 dollars a seat, not 2x
We priced both against the vendors' own pricing pages on 5 August 2026. The comparison everyone repeats is stacking ClickUp's top AI tier against Notion's base seat. Here is the like for like math.
By Ishan Vats · Certified Notion Consultant and Certified ClickUp Consultant
Notion is cheaper, but by 8 dollars per user per month, not the 2x you have probably read. On monthly billing ClickUp Business plus the Brain AI add-on is 28 dollars per seat against Notion Business at 20 dollars with core Notion AI included. The 2x gap only appears if you buy ClickUp's Everything AI tier at 28 dollars on top of the base plan. The deeper difference is that the two vendors meter AI differently: ClickUp charges by headcount, Notion charges by how much autonomous work you run.
The verdict
Is ClickUp Brain more expensive than Notion AI?
Yes, but by 40 percent on a like for like tier, not by 2x. That is the number almost every ClickUp Brain vs Notion AI comparison gets wrong, because it compares ClickUp's most expensive AI tier against Notion's base seat and calls the result a fair fight.
We hold both a Certified Notion Consultant and a Certified ClickUp Consultant credential, we deploy both stacks for clients, and we have no reason to want either answer. So we did the boring thing and read ClickUp's pricing page and Notion's pricing page on 5 August 2026 rather than an aggregator's summary of them. Here is what that changed:
- The honest monthly comparison is 28 dollars against 20 dollars. ClickUp Business is 19 dollars per user per month, and Brain AI is a 9 dollar add-on on top of it. Notion Business is 20 dollars per user per month with core Notion AI included. That is an 8 dollar per seat gap.
- On annual billing the gap nearly closes. ClickUp Business drops to 12 dollars and Brain AI to 7.20 dollars, so 19.20 dollars per seat. Notion advertises up to 20 percent off yearly but does not publish its annual per seat figure, so we will not invent one. On published numbers alone, annual ClickUp with Brain lands at or just under Notion's monthly list price.
- The 2x claim is real, but only for one configuration. ClickUp's Everything AI tier is 28 dollars per user per month on top of the base plan. That is 47 dollars a seat monthly against Notion's 20. If you have read that ClickUp costs double, this is the tier that comparison was quietly using.
The honest counter case for ClickUp: a flat per seat AI bill is predictable in a way a credit meter is not. If your whole team uses AI every day, ClickUp's model tells you your annual AI cost on day one, and Notion's does not.
The add-on model
What does ClickUp Brain actually cost per seat?
The thing to understand about ClickUp is that AI is never included. It is always an add-on priced per user per month, stacked on top of a base plan you are already paying for. So every ClickUp AI number you see needs a base plan added to it before it means anything.
ClickUp also runs its AI on a credit meter called AI Super Credits. Each add-on tier comes with a monthly credit allowance, credits are pooled across the whole Workspace rather than locked to the person who earned them, and they renew monthly without rolling over. Anything unused at the end of the month is gone.

The included model
What does Notion AI cost, and when do credits start?
Notion took the opposite approach. Notion states that Notion AI is included with its Business and Enterprise plans, covering Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, and Enterprise Search, at no extra cost on top of the 20 dollar Business seat. For everyday AI work, writing, summarising, asking questions of your workspace, there is no second invoice line at all.
The catch arrives when the AI starts working on its own. Notion meters autonomous work with Notion credits, priced at 10 dollars per 1,000 and bought by workspace admins as an add-on to Business and Enterprise. Two dated changes matter:
- Custom Agents began consuming credits on 4 May 2026. These are the agents that run on a trigger or a schedule rather than when you ask. Credit cost per run varies with how much work the agent does, which is exactly what makes the spend hard to forecast.
- Workers start requiring credits on 15 October 2026. Workers run background code for jobs that need no AI reasoning, like syncing data and writing updates. They are free during beta. Notion's own pricing note for Workers puts them at roughly 0.0023 dollars per run, which is about 4,348 runs per 1,000 credits.
So the honest way to read Notion's pricing is that the seat covers the AI a person uses, and credits cover the AI that runs without one. If you have never built a Custom Agent, your Notion AI bill is genuinely the 20 dollar seat. We go deeper on how that meter behaves in Notion AI credits and limits explained.
The numbers
What does the gap actually cost at your team size?
Both tools price per seat, so the per user gap is fixed and the annual difference scales with headcount. On monthly billing, ClickUp Business plus Brain AI runs 8 dollars per seat above Notion Business. Here is what that compounds to.
| Team size | Notion Business | ClickUp + Brain AI | Difference per year | ClickUp + Everything AI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 people | $100 a month | $140 a month | $480 | $235 a month |
| 10 people | $200 a month | $280 a month | $960 | $470 a month |
| 25 people | $500 a month | $700 a month | $2,400 | $1,175 a month |
| 50 people | $1,000 a month | $1,400 a month | $4,800 | $2,350 a month |
Now run it the other way, because this is the part nobody publishes. Notion's included AI is only cheaper until your credit spend eats the difference. On a 10 person team the gap is 80 dollars a month. At 10 dollars per 1,000 credits, 80 dollars buys 8,000 credits, and at roughly 4,348 Worker runs per 1,000 credits that is about 34,800 Worker runs a month, or roughly 1,160 a day, before Notion stops being the cheaper option.
That is a high ceiling. Most 10 person teams are not running a thousand automated background jobs a day, which is why Notion wins on price for the majority of small teams. But the ceiling is lower than it looks if you lean on Custom Agents rather than Workers, because an agent run that involves real AI reasoning consumes considerably more credits than a background sync. If your plan is a fleet of scheduled agents, model it before you assume Notion is cheaper.
The 5 minute decision
Which should your team actually pick?
Answer one question first: what fraction of your team will genuinely use AI every week? That single number decides this more than any feature comparison.
Choose Notion if
Only part of your team needs AI, you are under 25 people, or you cannot yet name the autonomous workloads you would run. The AI comes with the seat, so occasional users cost you nothing extra. This is the default answer for most teams we advise.
Choose ClickUp + Brain if
Everyone uses AI daily, you are already committed to ClickUp for project management, and you want a flat predictable AI line on the invoice. On annual billing the price difference nearly disappears.
Only buy the top tier if
You can name the agent workloads today. ClickUp Everything AI and heavy Notion credit spend are both justified by volume you have already scoped, never by the hope that someone will find a use for it later.
One last thing worth saying plainly, because it undercuts the entire comparison: the price difference between these two is smaller than the cost of picking the wrong tool for how your team actually works. An 8 dollar per seat gap on a 10 person team is 960 dollars a year. A workspace nobody adopts wastes considerably more than that. If you are still choosing the underlying platform rather than the AI on top of it, start with our four way comparison of Notion, ClickUp, Monday and Asana and settle that first.
