Is Notion cheaper than n8n or Make?

It depends on volume, not price per run. n8n and Make are far cheaper per run, but they live outside your workspace and somebody has to build the workflow. That build is the real cost, and it is on neither pricing page.

What to compare Notion Custom Agents n8n Make
Pricing model $10 per 1,000 credits, per run Flat plan by executions Flat plan by credits
Entry cost $10 per 1,000, on top of Business or Enterprise Starter $24 / mo for 2,500 executions Core $9 / mo for 10,000 credits
At higher volume Scales linearly. 10x the runs is 10x the bill Pro $60 / mo for 10,000. Business $800 / mo for 40,000 Pro $16 / mo for 10,000 credits. Teams $29 / mo
Free option None. Business and Enterprise only Self-hosted Community Edition is free with unlimited executions Free tier: 1,000 credits, 2 scenarios
Run out of credit? Agents pause. Unused credits forfeited Extra capacity billed as overage Credits reset monthly on the plan
Build effort Near zero. Describe it, it reads your workspace You build and maintain the workflow You build the scenario. Visual, but a build
Best when The work lives in Notion, needs judgment, low volume High volume, cross-tool, or you want to self-host High volume, cross-tool, visual builder
Rule of thumb: fixed trigger, fixed output, like a status rollup or sorting mail by a rule? That is deterministic work and Notion is charging you to think about it. Move it. Keep the agents that reason over messy input.

Notion AI credit calculator: common questions

How much does 1,000 Notion AI credits cost?+
$10. One credit equals $0.01. Credits are sold only on Business and Enterprise plans and are pooled across your entire workspace rather than assigned per seat.
Do unused Notion AI credits roll over?+
No. Credits reset monthly on your service anniversary and any unused balance is forfeited. Buy 5,000, use 3,000, and the remaining $20 is gone. That is why overbuying is a recurring cost, not a one-time one.
What happens when your Notion credits run out?+
Your Custom Agents pause automatically and stop running until credits are added or the pool resets. Admins are alerted at 80% and again at 100%, so the pause is warned but not prevented.
How many runs do 1,000 Notion credits cover?+
Between 30 and 90, depending on whose estimate you use. Notion's published per-run costs of $0.03 to $0.30 imply roughly 45 to 90 runs per 1,000 credits. Independent estimates put it closer to 30 to 60. Plan against the lower number.
Does Notion AI Autofill use credits?+
Basic Autofill is included and consumes no credits. Custom Agent Autofill does, because it runs with Custom Agent capabilities. Both look similar in the interface, which catches teams out.
Is Notion cheaper than n8n or Make?+
It depends on volume, not price per run. n8n's Starter is $24 a month for 2,500 executions and its self-hosted Community Edition is free with unlimited executions. Make's Core is $9 a month for 10,000 credits. Notion wins when the work lives inside Notion and the volume is low.

How this is calculated

Notion publishes a cost range per agent run. At $0.01 per credit those convert straight into credits per run. This is the whole table.

AgentNotion's cost / runCredits / run
Q&A$0.03 to $0.113 to 11
Mail triage$0.04 to $0.104 to 10
Task routing$0.05 to $0.155 to 15
Status update$0.08 to $0.188 to 18
Daily brief$0.10 to $0.3010 to 30

Why two estimates. Notion's figures imply 45 to 90 runs per 1,000 credits. Independent estimates say 30 to 60. We show both rather than averaging them into one fake number, and size the block against the pessimistic one.

Frequency. Hourly around the clock is 720 runs a month. Hourly in work hours is 198 (9 hours, 22 days). Daily is 30, weekdays 22, weekly 4.

Cross-check: Notion's own example is a status agent at 60 runs a month costing $4.80 to $10.80. This model returns exactly that. What it cannot see is which model your agent uses, how much it reads, and how many steps it takes, which are the three biggest drivers of burn. That is why the answer is a range.
