Sending domain

Definition

A sending domain is the domain your outbound email is sent from, often a separate lookalike of your main domain to protect its reputation.

Sending domain in practice

Teams running cold email usually buy secondary domains such as getacme.com or tryacme.com instead of sending from acme.com. If a secondary domain's reputation drops, your main domain, the one your invoices and customer email depend on, is not affected. Each secondary domain should redirect to your main site so a curious prospect lands somewhere real.

A sending domain is not ready on the day you buy it. It needs SPF, DKIM, DMARC and MX set up, mailboxes created, and a warmup period before real volume. How many domains you need depends on your daily volume and how much you send per inbox.
