Cold calling

Definition

Cold calling is phoning a prospect without a prior relationship. It works best on a verified direct dial, after an email has already given context.

Cold calling in practice

A call reaches a person in real time, which no other channel does. The obstacle is getting a number that rings the right person, since switchboards rarely put you through. Mobile and direct dial data costs more than email data, so it is worth spending only on accounts that score high.

Calling rules differ by country and change, from do not call registries to consent requirements for mobiles, so check the rules for each market you call. In a multichannel sequence the call usually comes after email and LinkedIn, so the prospect has seen your name before the phone rings.
