Claude Pro vs Max vs Team: every plan costs $20 per Pro of usage, except Max 20x
On 14 September Anthropic called a 17% cut to weekly limits a 25% increase. We read Anthropic's own plan pages on 17 September 2026, divided each price by the usage it buys, and found one plan that is half the price of the rest.

For a 5 to 10 person ops team, buy Claude Team Standard seats for everyone and upgrade only your one or two heaviest Claude Code or Cowork users to Premium. On monthly billing Claude Pro, Max 5x, and both Team seats all cost exactly 20 dollars for each Pro plan's worth of per session usage, so upgrading buys more usage, not cheaper usage. Max 20x is the only exception at 10 dollars a unit, but it is a personal plan outside your team workspace. The 14 September change does not alter that ranking: weekly limits on every plan moved from 150% of the original baseline to 125%, which Anthropic confirmed is a 17% reduction.
The verdict
Which Claude plan should an ops team buy after the September cut?
Team Standard for everyone, Premium for the one or two people who live in Claude Code or Cowork, and nobody on a personal Max plan unless the math below says otherwise. That was the right answer before 14 September and it is still the right answer after it, because the cut landed on every plan in the same proportion.
A disclosure first. We run Claude Code and Cowork every working day at IV Consulting, and we build on Claude for clients as a Claude Partner Network member. What we cannot give you is a count of how many messages or tasks fit in a week, because Anthropic does not publish its weekly limits as numbers, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Every price and multiplier on this page is read from Anthropic's pricing page and its help center on 17 September 2026.
Here is the finding that should drive your decision. Divide each plan's monthly price by the usage Anthropic says it buys, measured in multiples of the Pro plan:
- Pro is 20 dollars for 1x. That is 20 dollars per unit.
- Team Standard is 25 dollars for 1.25x, and Team Premium is 125 dollars for 6.25x. Both work out to 20 dollars per unit.
- Max 5x is 100 dollars for 5x. Also 20 dollars per unit.
- Max 20x is 200 dollars for 20x. That is 10 dollars per unit, half the price of everything else.
So every upgrade except one is linear. You are not getting a volume discount when you move a person to Premium or Max 5x, you are just buying more of the same thing at the same rate. That makes the plan decision simple: match each person's seat to their actual usage, and only reach for Max 20x when someone would genuinely use most of it.
What changed
Did Anthropic raise or cut Claude limits on 14 September?
It cut them. Weekly limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat based Enterprise plans went from 150% of the original baseline to 125% on 14 September 2026, a 17% reduction, even though the change was announced as a permanent 25% increase.
The arithmetic is short. Since May, Anthropic had been running a temporary 50% boost to weekly limits. Call the original baseline 100: with the boost, you had 150. On 29 August Anthropic announced that from 14 September weekly limits would be permanently 25% higher than the baseline, which is 125. The boost expired on 13 September, one day earlier. 150 down to 125 is a drop of one sixth, about 17%.
The first announcement led with the 25% and left out the boost it replaced. After pushback it was deleted and reposted, and Anthropic's follow up said directly that compared to the boosted level this "works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits", as BleepingComputer reported. We credit Anthropic for saying the number plainly in the end. The honest framing was available from the start.
Two details decide whether this affects your team:
- It is one pool, not a Claude Code pool. The change was reported as a Claude Code story, but Anthropic's help center says usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limit. Cowork runs in Claude Desktop. So an ops lead who never opens a terminal but runs scheduled Cowork tasks is drawing on the same weekly allowance that just shrank.
- It only bites people who were using the boost. If someone on your team was using less than 125% of the old baseline in a week, nothing changed for them. The people who feel it are the ones who were already hitting the weekly wall, or were close to it, during the summer.
To find out which group each person is in, have them check Settings, then Usage on claude.ai, or run /usage in Claude Code. That tells you more about your team's exposure than any article can.
The plans
Claude Pro vs Max vs Team: what does each seat actually buy?
Every paid Claude plan includes Claude Code and Cowork. What changes between plans is how much usage you get, stated by Anthropic as a multiple of the Pro plan's allowance per five hour session, plus whether the seat sits in a shared team workspace.
Anthropic's Team plan documentation gives Standard seats 1.25x the Pro allowance per session and Premium seats 6.25x, with a minimum of two members. The Max plan documentation gives 5x and 20x, and notes that Max also carries a weekly limit across all models. The last column is our arithmetic, not Anthropic's.

On annual billing the Team seats get cheaper still: 20 dollars for 1.25x and 100 dollars for 6.25x both come to 16 dollars per Pro unit, against 17 for Pro on annual billing. So for anyone paying yearly, a Team seat is the cheapest way to buy ordinary Claude usage, and Max 20x at 10 dollars is still the cheapest way to buy a lot of it.
The numbers
What does Claude cost a 5 to 10 person ops team?
For an 8 person ops team with six light users and two heavy Claude Code or Cowork users, Team with six Standard and two Premium seats costs 320 dollars a month on annual billing and buys 20 Pro units of usage. Putting the two heavy users on personal Max 20x plans instead costs 520 dollars and buys 47.5 units.
We picked that shape because it is the one we see most: most of the team uses Claude for drafting, summaries and research, and one or two people run long Claude Code sessions or scheduled Cowork tasks. Four ways to buy it:

Read the last column carefully, because it is cheaper per unit and more expensive in total. Max 20x only saves money if your heavy users would actually burn through more than 6.25x of Pro. If they were comfortably inside Premium before the cut, the extra 200 dollars a month buys headroom nobody uses.
The first column is the trap we see most often in small companies. Everyone expenses their own Pro plan, the bill looks lowest, and the team ends up with eight personal accounts, eight separate chat histories and no shared projects. Team Standard costs 24 dollars a month more for the whole team on annual billing and puts the work somewhere the company can see it.
Where the September cut does change the math is at the edge between Standard and Premium. A Standard seat's weekly ceiling shrank by the same 17% as everyone else's, so someone who used 90% of it in August is over it now. Check the usage page before you upgrade, not after the first person hits the wall on a Thursday.
The 5 minute decision
Which Claude plan should each person on your team hold?
Decide per person, not per company. The rate per unit is the same almost everywhere, so the only way to overspend is to give someone a seat that does not match their usage.
Team Standard if
The person uses Claude for writing, research, summaries and the occasional Cowork task. That is most of an ops team. It costs the same per unit as Pro and keeps the work in a shared workspace.
Team Premium if
The person runs Claude Code most days, owns scheduled Cowork routines, or hit the weekly limit after 14 September. It is five times a Standard seat for five times the usage, inside the same workspace.
Max 20x if
A solo builder or founder keeps running out on Premium. It is the only plan with a real per unit discount. Accept that it is a personal subscription and the work lives in that person's account.
